Welcome to our ArT-shirt class! You will be crafting a unique, wearable piece of art, enjoying the use of artistic techniques and materials, and making unforgettable memories! Below is some general information about fabric painting techniques and procedures.
Preparation Stage. Smooth cotton is one of the best fabrics when it comes to painting textiles. That is why we chose our high-thread-count, 100% cotton, Milanka brand t-shirts for this project. We do not settle for anything less than the best!
The fabric needs to be pre-washed. Pre-washing helps to clear out chemicals and starches that may remain in the fabric from manufacturing and shipping. Then, it needs to be ironed out. No sweat! We do all this preparation for you!
Paints. Our artist chose acrylic paints for this project. Acrylics are easy to work with, safe to use, eco-friendly, their colors are vibrant and easily mixed together to achieve a wide array of shades and hues. To prevent the paint from fading or coming off in the wash, the image painted with acrylics can be easily heat-set with a hot iron.
Tools. We will be using brushes, sponges, stencils, textured rags, pencils, and markers. Use a stencil or go free-hand. The choice is yours!
Results. Painting fabrics with acrylics results in a one-of-a-kind art! It is pleasant to touch, can be made dimensional or flat, and will withstand years of use and wash. If you choose to use glow-in-the-dark paints, it is also a fun way to stand out under the UV light or during the day with the vibrant colors of glow-in-the-dark acrylics.
Care of Your ArT-shirt. It is best to hand wash your ArT-shirt, but it can also be machine washed on gentile cycle. Wash it in cold water with a mild detergent. DO NOT USE FABRIC SOFTENER! It will eventually fade or even dissolve the paints away. Line dry or hang it up to dry out of direct sunlight. Warm iron if needed, but iron design face down or use pressing cloth over the painted area.
Rock your ArT-shirt!!!
